If you aren't a Christian, you will definitely be judged and pressured by religious groups. People will chase you down on the concourse to force religious pamphlets on you. The Flat-Earthers visit and have children hand out flat earth information pamphlets saying the Bible proves it, and there is an abortion graveyard set up ON CAMPUS. I?ve also witnessed non-students on campus with signs listing all the groups of people they believe are condemned to hell (Muslims, Buddhists, fornicators, atheists, etc.) antagonizing students. And those are just a few of the things I?ve witnessed in my 4 years at Auburn. Some of them have gone as far as to try to follow me to class to keep pushing their opinions on me; it's absolutely ridiculous.
The classes are of decent quality depending on your major, but if I?m being honest, you are way better off to choose a different school if you aren't a follower. This isn't a place for diversity, uniqueness, individuality, or forward thinking. It?s a place where the majority of students are white, privileged kids partying away their parents? money to ?Wagon Wheel? and hanging confederate flags on the back of a lifted truck. I have never had trouble making friends in my life, but I must say that I was a fish out of water at this place despite being white and from Alabama. I met very few people here that truly valued their education and had an interest about the world outside of Auburn, AL and football. Some people will see this and think I?m just being bitter, but I truly wish someone had typed a post like this for me before I made the biggest mistake of my life.
1. College helped me to set academic goals and work toward completing a degree.
I wanted to go to Vet school, but about 1 year in, when you make a few C's, the opportunity to get into AU Vet school starting waning, so I changed my Major to Wildlife Science (Zoology). I wanted to stay within the COSAM college. I had to go (2) extra quarters (before the school changed over to semesters) and graduated in Fall '94.
2. I would have done spent more time researching the job market. There was a hiring freeze for 1-2 years on Federal and State jobs when I got out of school and it was difficult to find a Parks/Fisheries/Wildlife Research position.3. For H.S Sophomores/Juniors, I would recommend reaching out to a private company, hospital, school, firm, etc, where you have an interest in, and volunteer, work after school, intern, etc with that business/company for 1-2 months at minimum, to see if you still are interested in that type of work. It will make you aware of the to day-to-day activities, issues, management style, pressures, responsibility and tasks it would take for you to work in that specific environment. If the 30-60 day trial period proves beneficial, then looking at colleges that support a Major in this field would be a smart choice.
