If you are the kind of student who enjoys conformity and working by the book, this is the place for you. The campus is beautiful, the people are not, but keep in mind this is not a rugged environment, but one that is a historical relic--you will conduct yourself as you would in a china shop, unless you're drunk, in which case you're allowed unbridled idiocy. It is, in its way, very much a place of extremes. And, don't forget, it is very much a SOUTHERN school. The races eat in segregated cafeterias by unwritten rule, and when I was at school there there was still very active controversy over whether confederate flags were allowed. I learned not to call it "the Civil War" to half my acquaintances, but "the War of Northern Aggression." It's not my purpose to talk down the school--the better its reputation, the better mine, after all. But it is absolutely not for everyone. Sorority girls and small towners may feel comfortable there, but if you're the kind of person who enjoys diversity and variety, these are not W&M's strong points.
Academically, it's hit or miss, depending on your professor. There is a tendency towards grade deflation, which is ultimately unfair and unrealistic when competing students graduating from higher tiered schools come out with a 4.0. The fact is, a GPA is a GPA when graduate schools are filtering through thousands of applications, and exceptions won't be made just because you went to W&M. For my part, this made me feel as if the adminstration didn't have the students' best interests at heart, and that was discouraging.
I had the sense that W&M was slipping into obscurity, as it often relies on past attendees and achievements for its reputation--it calls itself the school of presidents, but when did the last president go there? It talks a lot about how it is the oldest college (after Harvard) and how it would have been invited to the Ivy Leagues if it had gone private (like Harvard)and how it is called the Harvard of the South, but face it--it's not Harvard. If it were, I think I'd probably have a better job. Just food for thought.
