Graduate Assistant Comment: " College positively helped me in more ways than it negatively affected me. I learned more than I could've imagined. I knew that majoring in Ecology was the right thing to do and at first I was unsure of what direction I would go in. I knew that it would be something with animals. I did learn my likes and dislikes. I learned that I liked statistics but dislike calculus. I learned that I love being in the field (learned this through my field courses) more than in the classroom. I discovered that it's ok to ask questions...even if you are scared of the professors...because you are intimidated by their wealth of knowledge. I discovered that the stereotypes of faculty and staff (in general) aren't always true. For example, the second semester that I was at Brevard I took a course called Introduction to Basic Counseling. The person that teaches the course is the college counselor. Well, I thought that she would be the stereotypical 'anal retentive, I have to find something wrong with you kind of person.' I was so wrong. She became one of my mentors while I was at Brevard. Because of her class I learned about my personality type (ESTJ/ISTJ). Going to college helped me become more independent and to learn how to do things for myself...getting the oil changed in my car, how to change a tire, how to cook, and to get yourself in and out of mischevious trouble (even though I attempt to not look mischevious). Because of Brevard and the people that I met I was able to adopt a beautiful 9 1/2 (female) long haired seal-point siamese cat (that is with me now as I attend graduate school). She's so sweet and entertaining. I also learned that you can help your advisor as she helped me. When my advisor was up for promotion and tenure she asked me if I would write her a letter of recommendation. I was flattered. Of course I wrote the letter. I wish that I would've known that as you got into some of the higher level courses your professors will laugh at you. But not in a bad way. I had professors laughing at me because I would forget to wear the right shoes to class (usually I was wearing flip flops). I wish I would've known that it's ok to relax and not to be so hard on myself. Suggestions for students (high school or college). Just do it. Do what you have to do to get what you want (legally and ethically). If you know you are going to fail a test...fail proudly. One instructor said to the class...remember this...you know all the answers the instructors/professors have to ask the right questions. "
