Converse College Young Writers Summer Workshop

Converse College

The Young Writers Workshop is a weeklong program including seminars and panels by Converse College faculty and alumni writers. It is geared to a range of interests, designed for writers of all levels of development, and open to motivated rising high school sophomores, juniors and seniors. Students will: receive personal instruction and critique from professional writers in several genres of writing (poetry, fiction, and nonfiction memoir); learn techniques that help writers recognize strengths, potential and avenues for successful writing, editing and publishing; discover new ways to write about and empower their own lives; and participate in a public reading of their work. The Mission of the Research and Extension Apprenticeship Program is to provide new experiences and stimulating challenges to young men and women at Kentucky State University (KSU). Making of a Scientist

University of Denver Engineering School

The Making of a scientist is a college credit course especially designed for high school students interested in computers, math, and science. Students explore the relationship between mathematics and computer science and the applications of computers to science, especially chemistry. Topics include symbolic logic, modular arithmetic, number theory, cryptography, internal workings of a computer, and programming concepts. These ideas are used to design algorithms that are converted to computer programs. The six week summer science camp for forty rising 12th graders, from economically and/ or educationally disadvantaged backgrounds, provides academic enrichment in biology, chemistry, and mathematics. Participants are grouped according to their pre-test scores into small classes to strengthen their performance at their competitive levels.Four class groups are formed based on algebra, trigonometry, calculus I and calculus II.
