Writing About Film: Creative and Critical Eyes (Summer Scholars)

Furman University

Writing About Film will seek to develop the student's writing skills by focusing on the compelling ways in which films work to engage audiences. As a visual medium, film can often resist easy translation into written expression; yet film's condensed and complex forms of expression also solicit a particular appreciation and understanding that only careful writing (descriptive, interpretive and argumentative modes) can yield. The class will explore how many important filmmakers themselves began or continued to work as creative writers of scripts and/or critical interpreters of film.

Flash It! Automations of the Mind (Summer Scholars)

Furman University

Students will integrate video, text, audio, and graphics into immersive, rich experiences, and stunning animations. Macromedia’s Flash MX is the industry standard tool for creating rich Internet applications and video experiences. This one-week course will provide both novices and experienced users with opportunities to develop interactive animations. Other applications topic areas covered: web design, graphic arts, digital video and sound. This course would be ideal for students interested in graphic arts or animation technologies.

Interested in health, fitness, exercise or nutrition? This week long Summer Scholars program, sponsored by the Health and Exercise Science department, is designed to inform students about the critical components of active and healthy living and the various career opportunities in the field of health and human performance. Participants will study the topics vital to good health and fitness and experience activities which they might not otherwise try. Practicing what they preach, program directors will lead participants in daily physical activity. The NASA Prep summer enrichment program has been offered at Capitol College for the past 13 years. This 6-week program, run by the faculty and staff of Capitol is fully funded by NASA. Therefore, admission is competitive. Students learn essential college study skills, and take courses in computers, engineering, mathematics, and English. The program prepares students for the rigors of the first year of an engineering or computer science program.
