Idaho Junior Engineering, Math and Science (JEMS) Program
    ID, Moscow
    Phone: 208-885-4934
      University of Idaho
The University of Idaho College of Engineering sponsors the annual Idaho Junior Engineering, Mathematics, and Science (JEMS) Summer Workshop for students who have completed their junior or senior year of high school. The focus of the workshop is to expose students to engineering problems within technical and social contexts, and to encourage them to enroll in college. JEMS includes lectures and hands-on activities in Leadership, Engineering Design, Modeling, and possibly AutoCAD. Students will participate in lab exercises, field trips, computer exercises, and recreational activities.

Up to 60 participants are accepted to the workshop held the middle two weeks in July. The 2006 session is July 9-21, 2006. The application deadline for the 2005 program is May 26, 2006. The criteria for participant selection includes three years of mathematics (grades B or better), a minimum GPA of 3.0, a brief résumé, and a one-page essay describing why the student wishes to attend JEMS and what he or she wants to gain from this workshop.

The tuition for Idaho JEMS is $550. Scholarship funds are available, including funds to encourage female and minority students to apply. Students requesting a scholarship should complete the financial aid portion of the Idaho JEMS Application.

Participants experience the UI Campus--talking with professors and counselors, learning about college life, and participating in career planning activities that will help them become aware of high school course work needed to prepare for an engineering or computer science career. Idaho JEMS students live on-campus and are supervised by faculty and dorm counselors. Upon successful completion of the workshop, students earn two college credits.
