What is an MBA?

The Master of Business Administration (MBA or M.B.A.) is a master's degree in business administration (management). The MBA degree originated in the United States in the late 19th century when the country industrialized and companies sought scientific approaches to management. The core courses in an MBA program cover various areas of business such as accounting, finance, marketing, human resources, and operations management in a manner most relevant to management analysis and strategy. Most programs also include elective courses.

The MBA is a terminal degree and a professional degree.[1] Accreditation bodies specifically for MBA programs ensure consistency and quality of education. Business schools in many countries offer programs tailored to full-time, part-time, executive, and distance learning students, many with specialized concentrations.

How long does it take to get an MBA?

A Masters in Business Administration can be achieved in as little as 5 years. Some colleges offer Masters in Business Administration degrees coupled with another business degree allowing the individual studying business to graduate with two or more degrees in as little as five years.

What if I already have a bachelors degree in something else?

Individuals holding bachelors and masters degrees in health care, education, information technology amongst other areas can obtain their MBA in as little as one year. According to data released by the bureau of labor statistics in 2013 the top 10 % educational administrators made over $128k/year while a health services administrator made on average $101k/year, computer and information systems managers took home $120k/year.

Executive MBA Programs / Degrees

Individuals who have 10-15 years of real world middle management experience under their belt are eligible to apply for executive MBA programs. This degree or program is not for someone who already holds an MBA degree or who is seeking an MBA degree with no management experience. The executive MBA programs offered by universities is for individuals who have the real world experience and are looking to advance their career and who a regular track business degree would not be suitable for because of their experience level.
