What is Business and Philosophy Really?

In theory what is it?

The theory of my majors are quite different. The theory of a business major is to provide me with an understanding of all aspects of the business world. It allows me to evaluate the individual components of business and how to improve upon various aspects and get involved in these respective ways. The theory of my philosophy major is to provide me with an understanding of the world and why things may be the way they are.

What is it used for?

Business is used to start companies with hopes to make them successful or to become a part of a company to contribute to its further success. On the other hand, I believe that my philosophy major should not be treated as a means to an end, but rather evaluated for what it is. It helps the mind see worldly things from a rational perspective, and it guides you to examine everything around you.

What does the major actually entail - work-wise?

My business major entails work that lets the students examine hypothetical real-life situations and act upon them. The extent of my knowledge, however, is limited, since my experience thus far has only included pre-requisite courses (I am entering the business school this semester). For philosophy, the schoolwork includes lectures, reading, and writing many essays.

What kind of jobs do you get with it?

With a business major, there are jobs available in the business field in every respect. With a philosophy major, there are not many available jobs.

What are the fellow students like (personalitywise) in it?

With business, my fellow students are extremely bright, witty, and competitive. With philosophy, they are bright as well, but more relaxed and less competitive

Common Misconceptions

A common misconception about majoring in business is that the work includes no independent thought and that it merely trains you to follow a particular system. This is not true at all - creativity is the key to being a successful businessman. A common misconception about majoring in philosophy is that it is very easy and that you do not have to worry about going to class. These are terribly false as well - the philosophy courses I have taken have been the most challenging courses I have faced at Emory. The essay topics are challenging and writing a quality paper takes a lot of hard work. Going to class is vital to succeeding as well - not only are they very informative, but the professors are extremely intelligent and interesting; by not going to class you cheating yourself out of a valuable resource.
