What is Computational Science/Engineering Really?

In theory what is it?

The theory of computation, the discretization of the problems of continuous mathematics, error analysis and computability, algorithmic correctness and efficiency, etc. Also, domain knowledge from a specific field of science/engineering.

What is it used for?

Computational science/engineering is the application of mathematics and computer science to problems in science and engineering where analytical solutions are impossible and/or unfeasible. Nearly all fields of science and engineering rely on computational techniques.

What does the major actually entail - work-wise?

Math: Calculus, Differential Equations, Linear Algebra, Numerical Analysis, Discrete Mathematics

Science/Engineering: Core science courses in your specialization subject. For example, physics courses, chemistry courses, mechanical engineering courses, etc.

What kind of jobs do you get with it?

Computational science/engineering majors are qualified for jobs in research, engineering, software development, to name a few. The interdisciplinary nature of the coursework is very marketable and prepares the degree holder for work in almost any technical field. The degree is also excellent preparation for graduate study.

What are the fellow students like (personalitywise) in it?

Although it varies a lot from the stereotype, one can expect a fair mix of math, computer, science, and engineering students… so expect peers who are quiet, pale, eccentric, and/or dull, respectively.

Common Misconceptions

You hear a lot about poor job prospects in science/engineering, as well as outsourcing. Forget that nonsense… tech people have it loads better than those in non-technical fields.

Are things going well in Computer Engineering?

Going Well %78
Not Going Well %22
More: All Majors Satisfaction ??? This is a social "life satisfaction" question. Overall, would people who graduated with a degree in Computer Engineering say that their life is going well? It could be interpreted in terms of stress, salary, long hours, future prospects, etc. *** not counting those currently in grad school

Graduates who stayed in Computer Engineering

Still in Field %77
Got out %23
More: All Majors Still in field ??? A high "got out" percentage can be interpreted a couple of ways -- for instance, perhaps the major is a great stepping stone to becoming a totally different career -- like a doctor. Or perhaps the jobs one gets with the major just aren't that great. *** not counting those currently in grad school
