I was naturally gifted at sciences, art, and humanities but preferred humanities and went along with CS to please my mom. Thousand to five hundred person CS classes, was dropped from study abroad, arrogant leftist, violent protests, incompetent academic advisors who want you to take the easy way out, poor mental health support. I was made to feel down on myself because I was shy due to an anxiety disorder and had poor grades in CS. I spent a few years contemplating suicide and there was no safety net to make sure I didn?t do it. I can?t visit that area without getting triggered. If you love learning, I recommend a scholarship school or UCSB College of Creative Studies. And the staff is too busy bragging about all of their Nobel Prize winners, to give a rat's @ss about the undergraduates. Have a question for the financial aid office? Submit a "case" [i.e. fill out an online form], and wait several days and MAYBE they will reply to you. Got a question about why the grades aren't appearing? Fuhgeddaboutit. Registrar won't even respond. I go in to make sure I'm going to graduate. The staff member sits polishing her nails and texting her boyfriend and won't even answer my question. The website was recently rebuilt and is a nightmare. No more "degree audit" to tell you what you need to graduate. Dorm food sucks. Etc. etc. My brother went to UCSD? campus and staff sooooo much better. The academics here are HARD, but they will challenge you to understand the material at a deeper level. If you are in STEM, you will at some point encounter problem sets that will make you want to cry, or walk about of an exam not knowing how to do half of the problems. This is the kind of thing that will push you to work harder and eventually make you a better scientist/engineer. I love that feeling of unbelievably accomplishment when, after hours and hours of work, you finally finish a cs project or ee problem set, and everything you learned in lecture actually starts to make sense.

I also love the diversity of the campus. Everyone I have met here are super friendly and passionate about something. There is very little competitiveness, we all work together and struggle together on problem sets. The campus itself is beautiful (although a little run down), and the city of Berkeley is an awesome college town. There is soooo much good food that is cheap and open very late. Norcal weather is awesome (sunny and 60 degrees most of the time) and SF is only a half an hour BART ride away. We also have the greatest college memes page #BMFET :D.

A lot of other people on this site commented about the political views of this campus. I'm pretty sure those people don't actually go here. People here are generally liberal, but the vast majority of the population is pretty moderate. Most students are too busy with schoolwork or other extracurriculars to be too concerned about politics. Protests happen sometimes, but they don't bother anyone. The only two downsides of Berkeley I can think of are scheduling and housing prices.

Overall, I have really enjoyed my time at Cal so far. Go bears! If you are openminded at all do not attend. You will find no openmindedness here. You either agree with what the faculty agrees with politically/socially or you are wrong and will not graduate. This is a horrible place to be. There is open violence on campass towards people with the "wrong" views and that violence has the full support of the school.
